How to Edit Avchd Videos in Windows Movie Maker
I don't have any problems using Sony camcorder AVCHD files in Movie Maker 2012 on either Windows 7 or 8.1. What versions of Windows and Movie Maker are you using?

How are you trying to open the AVCHD file? What's the make/model of camcorder? Do these files play normally in Windows Media Player? Do other file types (.wmv, .jpg, etc.) work as expected? Do you get a specific error message?

1. How are you trying to open the AVCHD file?
2. What's the make/model of camcorder? Do these files play normally in Windows Media Player?
3. Do other file types (.wmv, .jpg, etc.) work as expected?
4. Do you get a specific error message?
1. I first start WMM and then add the video tracks. The first time the program gave the message "create a movie in Photogallery", the next day it opened the file, but only after WMM prepared the files (as the message said). It takes ages before WMM has prepared the files and then it's in MPEG4.
I can only save it in MPEG4 or WMV. I prefer higher quality than WMV and a more common used format, as MPEG2.
2. The camcorder is Sony HDR-PJ230. The files play in Windows Media Player.
3. Other file types work well.
4. the error message is now: WMM is preparing the files

Which edition of Windows 7 are you using?
AVCHD video files that contain Dolby Digital audio can be used in Movie Maker if your computer is running one of the following editions of Windows: Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate.
What kind of files can I use in Movie Maker?

You may try delete the temp files by navigating to the location below and check if it helps.
C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp
Post back the results and we will be glad to help you further.

Hello Bhavya Ashok,
Thanks for your reply.
I use Windows 7 Home Premium. I often delete temp files and it makes no difference to WMM.
In the meantime I've found another program to make movies from the video tracks, so I don't need WMM at the moment.
Regards,
Bella
