When it comes to reading messages on your phone, two simple tricks will allow you to see exactly what a user has said, while leaving them none the wiser, with very minimal inconvenience to you.
If you prefer to chat on your computer, however, hiding read receipts takes a little more work, but it is still entirely possible.

Read them on your notification screen
Facebook Messenger will send push notifications to your phone each time your receive a new message.
This means that messages are already stored on your phone as soon as they are received, regardless of whether you have read them or not.

The banner will show you who the message is from and what they have said, allowing you to read the message without ever opening the Messenger app, and thus not delivering a read receipt to the sender.
This trick does, however, become less effective once you start receiving a large number of messages in quick succession.
The notifications screen can only hold a certain number of messages, and older tabs will drop out as new messages filter in.

Turn Airplane Mode on
As mentioned before, once your phone receives a message, the information is loaded and stored in the Messenger app already.
If you want to read these messages without the app knowing, all you need to do is remove its ability to update and send new data - by way of the internet.
By switching your phone to Airplane Mode, you remove Facebook's ability to process the fact that you have opened a message, as it does not have the internet connection to do so.
Once you have received a message, switch your phone to Airplane Mode, open up Messenger and read away without worrying about the person on the other end knowing you've see what they had to say.
Just make sure you close the app before you take your phone off Airplane Mode once again.
Install third-party plug-ins for your browser
For desktop users, it gets a little bit more complicated if you want to get around read receipts.
When it comes to Google Chrome, you have a few options.
If you open up a new tab and click on the icon marked "Apps", you are able to access the Chrome Web Store.
In the Web Store, search for the browser extension "Unseen".
All you need to do is click "Add to Chrome" and this genius extension will install to your browser, automatically blocking read receipts when you open anything sent to you in Messenger while using Google Chrome.
Unseen is just one of a number of similar apps available to Chrome users.
If you prefer to use Firefox while surfing the web, an Add-on will do the same job.
Select the "Add-ons" tab from the menu at the bottom of your browser window.
Simply search for the app entitled "Message Seen Disable" and click the "Install" or "Add to Firefox" button to allow you to read messages without sender knowing a thing.
