Best Diet Soda and Heavy Cream
Ever have a creamsicle growing up? Do you miss that taste? Our Low Carb Orange Creamsicle Cocktail is for the grown-up who misses that delightful taste – delicious! This one will amaze you – guaranteed! And most importantly you will only have 1g of carb when you finish this delicious cocktail. If you like creamy summer cocktails similar to a Piña Colada, but with an orange and vanilla flavor, this one is for you. It is not often you can taste orange on a low-carb lifestyle, but this is the answer – enjoy!
The idea for this recipe came after a recent walk through a local Mall and remembering the days when the "Orange Julius" was all the rage. That sugary orange flavored drink with just a touch of vanilla was a real treat. We also see a lot of orange smoothies on-line and pretty much every other fruit. So, the basics were simple – orange, cream, vanilla, and sweetness. Just without the sugar and carbs! A little vodka never hurts, especially since it contains zero carbs!
Ingredients
We know extracts eliminate carbs and add a flavor punch. Orange extract and vanilla extract are needed for this drink. Orange crush soda (pop) was also Joanie's favorite growing up, so a diet version made sense for coloring and additional flavor. Heavy cream makes this smoothie drink creamy and "voila," you have a creamsicle! The vodka was an after-thought, but it adds to our low carb cocktail category. The end product of our creation is another low-carb cocktail and it is wonderful. We love it!
You could eliminate the vanilla extract and use vanilla flavored vodka instead. Flavored vodkas are all the rage. They make virtually every berry or fruit and even cookie dough flavoring. The problem is we worry that the flavorings add sugar and will raise the level of carbs in our drink. We did find some indication through Google searches that two manufacturers claim to use berries and fruits and have no additional carbs (Skyy and Absolut). But, we also found conflicting articles on that so we suggest simply using vanilla extract instead.
We also urge you to use Nielsen Massey Orange Extract. It is the best and cleanest flavor variety on the market. Adjust the amount based upon your taste, but we found 1/4 teaspoon per drink works well.
Preparation Tips
A top notch blender is a must to make the drink frothy and to whip the heavy cream similar to our piña colada cocktail. We invested years ago in a Vitamix that will work well for any blending applications. We also have a beautiful "bar blender" with pulsing functions. It provides the speed you see when your local bar tender mixes whipped drinks. A top notch blender is worth the investment.
If you prefer a less frothy drink you can cut down on the ice. Also, another tip would be in the color of the presentation. If you want your guests to experience a more orange coloring for their cocktail you can add a few drops of red and yellow food coloring. It will really look like a creamsicle when you use this little trick. The diet soda should provide the correct sweetness. If you prefer a sweeter version just add a drop of EZ-Sweetz.
We have one remaining tip. Before making your next batch of our Low Carb Orange Creamsicle Cocktail close your eyes and remember how much you enjoyed the taste of that creamsicle when you were young – then enjoy this creation. It tastes the same!
